Judicial officers are often exposed to distressing evidence and material which makes vicarious trauma one of the risks of judicial work. Strategies and supports exist to manage and protect your wellbeing.

This tailored program will assist you to better understand the nature of vicarious trauma and the strategies you can use to mitigate the risks and protect your wellbeing and that of court staff.

Join judicial wellbeing experts along with retired judge his Honour Alexander Horneman-Wren SC, to:

  • gain insights into the early warning signs of vicarious trauma
  • learn how to utilise evidence-informed strategies to mitigate risk
  • better understand available supports and treatments
  • discuss best practices for responding to and supporting court staff.

As this program is part of the Magistrates' Court Regional Coordinating Magistrates Training, registrations via the College website are not required.

Former Judge of the District Court of Queensland
His Honour Alexander Horneman-Wren SC

His Honour ​​Alexander (Sandy) Horneman-Wren graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Business from Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education (now the University of Central Queensland) and later graduated in Law from the Queensland University of Technology. His Honour was in private practice at the Queensland Bar for 19 years and was appointed Senior Counsel in 2009. 

​His Honour's practice at the Bar included administrative, industrial and employment law in both federal and state jurisdictions. He was also a member of the Law Council of Australia’s Industrial Law Committee and the Bar Association of Queensland’s Professional Conduct Committee. 

His Honour was appointed to the District Court of Queensland in November 2012.  He was also appointed Deputy President of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (QCAT) for the next three years and was also a judge of the Children’s court of Queensland and the Queensland Planning and Environment Court. 

His Honour retired from judicial office in January 2025.​
