LOG IN TO REGISTER

An opportunity for new magistrates to come together and reflect on the ethical dimensions and courtroom skills required to succeed in the role.

Developed especially for recently appointed magistrates, this program includes theoretical and practical sessions on:

  • the essential ethical and personal qualities required to succeed in the role
  • exercising authority in the courtroom
  • skills and techniques for communicating effectively with all parties in the courtroom
  • strategies for preventing and managing the impact of vicarious trauma.

Supreme Court of Victoria
Justice Karin Emerton

Justice Karin Emerton was appointed to the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria in October 2009. For eight years, Justice Emerton was the Judge in Charge of the Valuation Compensation and Planning List in the Common Law Division. As a result, her Honour sat principally in common law matters and most frequently in cases involving land use disputes and related commercial matters. From 2010 to 2012, her Honour was a member of the Victorian Law Reform Commission. In June 2018, Justice Emerton was appointed a judge of the Court of Appeal. In 2022, she was appointed President of the Court of Appeal. Immediately prior to her appointment as a judge, her Honour was Crown Counsel (Advisings) in the Department of Justice and, before that, she was a barrister at the Victorian Bar for 14 years. Her practice was primarily in the area of public law. Her Honour came to the law by a circuitous route, having first completed a Doctorate in Philosophy at the Sorbonne.

Supreme Court of Victoria
Justice Jane Dixon

Justice Jane Dixon currently sits as the Principal Judge of the Criminal Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria. Her Honour was appointed to the Court in 2015. Prior to her appointment, her Honour was a member of the Victorian Bar for over 20 years, specialising in criminal defence. During her time at the Bar, her Honour was a member of the Bar Council, Chair of the Pro Bono Committee, and a founding member and mainstay of the Indigenous Lawyers Committee. Outside the Bar, her Honour also served as President of Liberty Victoria.

Proven results, a client focus, and a love of learning enables him to deliver tailored, nuanced, and effective end-to-end solutions, from consultation, facilitation, and design through to delivering training and coaching. Simon’s background in psychology and coaching enables him to think critically and to design learning programs based on evidence; his performance background enables him to communicate persuasively and deliver strongly in the room; and his business experience enables him to adapt to different contexts quickly.

Phoenix Australia
Professor Andrea Phelps

Professor Andrea Phelps is the Deputy Director of Phoenix Australia – Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health. Her research has focused on veterans mental health and the nature and treatment of posttraumatic stress, including moral injury and posttraumatic nightmares. She has over 20 years of clinical experience in the assessment and treatment of posttraumatic mental health problems in Veteran and emergency service populations and was responsible for the accreditation of PTSD treatment programs for Veterans across Australia.Andrea leads a number of major projects including the Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Acute Stress Disorder, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Complex PTSD. She also consults to a range of Government departments and industry partners on research, service development and policy issues regarding organisational responses to psychological trauma. She has over 140 publications including peer reviewed papers, book chapters and technical reports.
