Chief Justice Susan Kiefel AC, the first woman to serve as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, has announced her early retirement.

Originally scheduled to retire in January, her Honour will now leave the court later this year. During a recent court hearing, Chief Justice Kiefel informed the Court that it would be her final hearing, and she will officially leave the Court in November. Justice Stephen Gageler AC paid tribute to her Honour's remarkable tenure, praising her "firm and gracious presence" that will be dearly missed.

Chief Justice Kiefel assumed the role in January 2017, after serving as a Justice of the High Court since September 2007. Her Honour's retirement marks the conclusion of an exceptional 16-year service to the Australian community.

In international news, Dame Sue Carr has been appointed the Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales from 1 October 2023. This appointment follows the retirement of The Rt Hon. the Lord Burnett of Maldon. Dame Sue Carr is the first woman to be appointed as the most senior judge in England and Wales in the role's 750-year history.
