The Sentencing Advisory Council has released an update to its SACStat sentencing database, featuring new data for 256 offences sentenced in the Victorian higher courts (the County and Supreme Courts) over the five years to 30 June 2023.

According to the latest data:

  • The most prevalent principal proven offences in the higher courts were armed robbery (620 cases), aggravated burglary (454 cases), and intentionally causing injury (367 cases).
  • The offences with the longest median prison sentences imposed were murder (22.5 years), attempted murder (11.7 years), and conspiring to import a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug (10.8 years).

SACStat includes all offences heard in the higher courts with at least 10 sentenced charges over the five-year period. The data also accounts for appeals determined by the Court of Appeal prior to 30 June 2023.

You can access the updated SACStat database on the Sentencing Advisory Council's website.
