The College is saddened to learn of the passing of Ernest (Ernie) Schmatt AM PSM, former long time Chief Executive of the Judicial Commission of New South Wales.
Ernie served in various senior legal and management positions in the NSW public sector before his tenure as Deputy Chief Executive of the Judicial Commission, which began in October 1987. He later assumed the role of Chief Executive in 1989, holding it for over 30 years until his retirement in February 2022.
During his leadership, the Judicial Commission experienced remarkable growth and innovation, particularly through its dedication to judicial education and the development of essential resources like bench books and the Judicial Information Retrieval System (JIRS). Ernie's contributions extended internationally, with involvement in judicial capacity-building programs across several countries. His distinguished service was recognised with honours including the Order of Australia and the Public Service Medal.
The College extends its condolences to his wife Helen and his family during this difficult time.
