The Sentencing Advisory Council (SAC) has released updated data on sentencing in the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria through its SACStat database.
The new data covers over 450 offences sentenced in the Magistrates’ Court during the three years to 30 June 2023, and it includes all offences that had 40 or more charges.
The most prevalent offences in the three years to June 2023 were:
- commit an indictable offence while on bail (40,259 charges in 21,867 cases)
- unlawful assault (17,225 charges in 12,907 cases)
- drive a motor vehicle while authorisation is cancelled or suspended (25,731 charges in 22,350 cases).
SACStat also includes data on over 250 offences sentenced in the County and Supreme Courts of Victoria for the five years to 30 June 2022.
