High Court welcomes new Chief Justice Gageler and Justice Beech-Jones.

Chief Justice Stephen John Gageler AC
On a historic day for the Australian judiciary, the Hon. Stephen John Gageler AC was officially sworn in as the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, followed by the swearing-in of the Hon. Robert Thomas Beech-Jones as a Justice of the High Court. The ceremonies took place on 6 November 2023, in Canberra.

Chief Justice Gageler, in his reflective address, highlighted his life's journey and the many influences that shaped his career: "I am the product of decent, hardworking parents who raised me happily in a small rural community... As much as anything else, I am the product of this institution. I am steeped in its history. I recognise that I have now become absorbed into that history. My first full‑time job was in this building. So now too will be my last."

His honour also acknowledged the contemporary challenges he faces in his new role, emphasising, "Recent events across a range of comparable jurisdictions have underscored the criticality to democratic order and individual liberty of the existence of a judicial branch of government that is, and that is trusted by other branches of government and by the people to be, at once competent, impartial, and independent. Those same global events have demonstrated that those qualities are susceptible to erosion from within the judicial branch just as they can be vulnerable to external assault."

This ceremony not only marked a new chapter in Chief Justice Gageler's distinguished legal career but also celebrated his longstanding dedication to the principles of justice and law. It underscored his awareness of the evolving global challenges in maintaining judicial integrity and the importance of upholding the judiciary's competence, impartiality, and independence.

Later in the day, Justice Beech-Jones was sworn in, marking another significant moment for the High Court. In his heartfelt address, Justice Beech-Jones reflected,“The presence of my family and friends on this day serves to remind me of where I came from, what is important and make my affirmation of office that much more solemn.”

His swearing-in was attended by an equally distinguished audience, including former Chief Justices and other senior members of the judiciary. Justice Beech-Jones's appointment follows a notable tenure in the Supreme Court of New South Wales and is seen as a testament to his judicial acumen and commitment to the rule of law.
