New youth justice centre set to open soon.

Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre
The new Cherry Creek Youth Justice Precinct is scheduled to open its doors in the coming weeks, representing a significant step forward for Victoria's youth justice system. The precinct aims to provide a contemporary facility that supports the rehabilitation of young individuals while prioritising safety for both staff and the community.

Starting in August, the precinct will begin accommodating its first cohort of males aged 15 to 18. With improved facilities and enhanced access to services, the precinct aims to break the cycle of reoffending by offering targeted support and a secure environment. Key design features include an intensive intervention community, a specialised primary health centre, and two mental health units, all contributing to the overall goal of effective rehabilitation.

Moreover, the Cherry Creek Precinct will offer educational and vocational opportunities, such as VCE and VET courses, through a partnership between Parkville College, the Gordon TAFE, and Virtual Schools Victoria. These programs will play a crucial role in equipping young individuals with essential skills for a brighter future.

The imminent opening of the Cherry Creek precinct marks an important milestone for Victoria's youth justice system. It signifies progress towards the closure of the aging Malmsbury precinct, which has been operational since 1965, by the end of 2023.
