Chief Judge Kidd addresses evolution in managing sexual offence cases.

Chief Judge Peter Kidd
The Hon. Justice Peter Kidd, Chief Judge of the County Court of Victoria, recently delivered a keynote address at the College's Managing sexual offence cases event, reflecting on the ‘visible shift in courtroom culture … reflective of generational reform’ that he has seen over time in this area.

In his speech titled 'An evolving justice system,' Chief Judge Kidd discussed the varying experiences of complainants during sexual offence trials and the justice system's efforts to accommodate their needs while maintaining fairness. His Honour highlighted several reforms aimed at supporting complainants, such as remote evidence giving, ground rules hearings, and protections against intrusive questioning. Chief Judge Peter Kidd also underscored the fundamental trial principles that ensure a fair trial for the accused, including the presumption of innocence and the right to cross-examine witnesses.

Chief Judge Kidd's message encapsulated the transformative shift in courtroom culture towards greater sensitivity and fairness in managing sexual offence cases. His Honour acknowledged the complexities and challenges of balancing the rights of complainants and accused, emphasising the necessity for ongoing, evidence-based reforms to improve the trial process while ensuring justice for all parties involved.
