Mental illness and drug dependency are common in people appearing in the criminal justice system. Yet they often don’t get the support they need.

Join Dr Danny Sullivan, consultant forensic and adult psychiatrist, and gain a current understanding of the fundamentals of mental illness in the justice system. 

Part 3 of this series will explore: 

  • the nature and types of mental illness 
  • treatment and recovery from mental illness 
  • how symptoms may present in court and strategies for responding 
  • access to assessment and referral within courts and forensic mental health services. 

This seminar will be especially useful for new appointees and those wanting a refresher or to deepen their knowledge on this important topic.

Forensic and adult psychologist
Dr Danny Sullivan
Dr Sullivan is a consultant forensic and adult psychiatrist, previously Executive Director Clinical Services of Forensicare. He remains involved in public mental health, currently consultant to the first regional forensic service of Forensicare, in Barwon Southwest region. In addition, he has honorary academic appointments at the University of Melbourne and Swinburne University: he is involved in research and teaching including on topics of forensic disability and sexual offending. He provides expert evidence in most Australian jurisdictions.
